The Court Condensed Incense

The Court Condensed Incense, known as the “Health-Preserving Jewel” and hailed as the “Alchemy of Time,” boasts exquisite craftsmanship. This craftsmanship not only enriches the profound connotation of China’s condensed incense culture but also endows its products with unique artistic and vital qualities.
The incense beads meticulously crafted using the court’s secret condensed incense technique hold a remarkable secret: an amber-like reticular structure forms inside the beads. This delicate structure serves as an ideal environment for the secondary fermentation of incense powder, enabling the Court Condensed Incense Beads to stand out prominently among various condensed incense products. They exhibit extraordinary charm distinct from ordinary incense beads, featuring 4 rare characteristics: Its fragrance changes at different times; in some cases, it even takes on a different scent every week.As the “Alchemy of Time,” its fragrance becomes richer and more mellow with the passage of time.
The same batch of condensed incense beads emits different aromas when worn by different people. The beads grow increasingly solid over time. After 3 years, they attain a fine stone-like texture, with a hardness of Mohs 4 (comparable to that of lapis lazuli).
The Court Condensed Incense Beads are a miracle shaped by both craftsmanship and time. They are not only health-preserving treasures to be worn but also olfactory artworks that carry a thousand years of wisdom and cultural heritage.

Incense Blending

The Hexiang (Incense Blending) Craftsmanship is a national intangible cultural heritage of China, representing the highest craftsmanship in traditional Chinese incense-making. Incense products made through this craft are formulated in accordance with the “monarch-ministerassistant-guide” principle (a fundamental formula principle in Traditional Chinese Medicine) and handcrafted using natural incense materials.

The embryonic form of Hexiang Craftsmanship emerged during the periods from the Spring and Autumn, Warring States to the Qin and Han dynasties. It officially took shape in the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties. During this era, people, based on the pharmacological properties of aromatic medicinal materials and pathological conditions, blended a variety of precious woods, medicinal materials, and spices to create medicinal incense for treating illnesses, and the concept of “incense formulas” came into being.

The selection of materials

The selection of materials for making hexiang (compounded incense) is meticulous. It must use precious aromatic woods such as agarwood, sandalwood, styrax, and dalbergia wood, which are decocted together with rare and special Chinese medicinal ingredients. Additionally, nanmu wood, bletilla striata (a traditional Chinese herb), and hundred-flower honey are used as binders in the production process.
Making hexiang is not merely a simple combination of fragrant and medicinal ingredients; more importantly, it follows the principles of pathology and pharmacology, emphasizes the harmony between humans and incense, and aligns with the harmony of timing (heavenly conditions) and geography (earthly conditions). The production process of condensed hexiang consists of 33 steps, including material selection, material purification, rough crushing, filtration, processing and refining, roasting, aging of ingredients, fine grinding, formulation, clay kneading (for incense base), clay awakening, handcrafting, secret drying, and cellar storage. Each step requires the oversight of incense artisans with years of experience. Among folk crafts, there is a praise for it: “As soft as ointment and wood, yet achieving the luster of gold and stone.
